Objective: This study aims to explore the available scientific evidence on stigma and social exclusion related to leprosy in vulnerable populations, considering the associated social, cultural, and economic impacts.
Method: An integrative literature review was conducted in the LILACS (via BVS) and MedLINE (via PubMed) databases, using descriptors related to social stigma, social exclusion, and leprosy. Original articles published between 2020 and 2025, in Portuguese and English, were included.
Results: A total of 19 articles were identified, with the highest number of publications in 2021, followed by 2020. All studies were conducted in Brazil, particularly in the Northeast region. Cross-sectional studies predominated, accounting for approximately 60% of the publications. The evidence indicates that leprosy remains strongly associated with social vulnerability, low education, and limited access to healthcare services, contributing to late diagnosis, social stigma, and exclusion of affected individuals.
Conclusion: Stigma and social exclusion related to leprosy are closely linked to social inequalities and vulnerability, negatively affecting quality of life, mental health, and social participation of affected individuals. The findings highlight the need for health education, early diagnosis, and public policies aimed at reducing stigma and social disparities.
