Objective: To analyze pelvic floor dysfunctions associated with episiotomy and their implications on postpartum women's quality of life.
Methods: An integrative review of the literature was conducted using PubMed, Lilacs, Scielo, Pedro, and Cochrane databases, focusing on studies published between 2014 and 2024. Inclusion criteria involved randomized clinical trials addressing pelvic floor dysfunctions in postpartum women after episiotomy.
Results: The findings indicate a significant association between episiotomy and increased risks of perineal pain, dyspareunia, decreased libido, and difficulties in achieving orgasm. The combined use of forceps exacerbates persistent pain and insufficient lubrication. A notable lack of studies comparing pre- and post-episiotomy sexual function was observed.
Conclusions: Episiotomy should be evaluated carefully based on robust evidence to avoid unnecessary impacts on women's quality of life. Greater emphasis is needed on the role of physiotherapy in mitigating pelvic floor dysfunctions and improving postpartum recovery. Multidisciplinary approaches and educational initiatives are critical to enhancing pelvic health and promoting informed childbirth practices.
