The National Policy on Integrative and Complementary Practices stimulates a range of therapeutic procedures and offers to the population in the SUS in Brazil. This study explored the adherence of these procedures to the elderly assisted at the Health Units of Ituiutaba/MG. Methods: This was a mixed, cross-sectional and descriptive research, in which data were collected through interviews and semi-structured questionnaires. A total of 155 elderly were interviewed, 89 were women and 66 were men, with an average age of 70.7 years, and the majority with ≤ 4 years of study, retirees and/or pensioners, with a partner, with monthly income of ≤ 1.000 reais and who did not live alone. Thus, 20.6% revealed the use of alternative therapy, with phytotherapy being the most mentioned among users (78.1%); 96.1% use allopathic medicines and 52.3% the use of medicinal plants. It concludes that few elderly people use complementary therapies and that the biomedical model still prevails in the attendance, perhaps due a lack of knowledge of this population on the existence of complementary practices, due a lack of public investments, or training of health professionals in this county. It is necessary a new approach, so that off benefiting the health of the elderly.
