Physical Activity, Motivation, SeniorsAbstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate the reasons that lead the adherence and continuity of elderly people in physical activity programs through a literature review. We used studies published in Portuguese between 2012 and 2018, accessed by the search engines: Google Scholar, Scielo, Pubmed, Lilacs, Capes Periodicals and Proquest. As inclusion criteria, we used only original articles, published in Portuguese and from journals with Qualis grade above B4. The reviewed articles showed that the main factor leading to the adherence of the elderly to the practice of physical activity was medical indication, followed by the disease prevention factor. Regarding the reasons for continuity, the most cited factors in the reviewed studies were sociability and well-being. Thus, it can be said that health and disease prevention were the main motivating factors for the practice and that for continuity, sociability and well-being are relevant factors.
