Abstract: Oncologic disease relates to a high rate of morbidity and mortality of the world’s population. In the case of neoplasias associated to male gender, those involving the genitals are among the most feared ones. To an early identification, it is indicated to perform regular self-examination of the external genitalia. However, this practice is not well known. The aim of this article is to verify the ocurrence os risk factors for penile cancer (PC) and testicle cancer (TC) among college students, and if the practice of self-examination of the external genitalia was used by them as a way to detect early changes in the genitalia. The method utilized in this study was exploratory, with a crossectional approach. We used a questionnaire on the practice of self-examination and exposure to risk factors associated with penile and testicular cancer among 350 college students. As a result, among participants, 45% knew self-examination and 17% performed it at some point. Among the students exposed to risk factors, there was a low demand for medical assistance. Ultimately, we concluded that the practice of self-examination, as a strategy of preventing/detecting early male genital cancer, is not a commom practice among college students, and that there is lack of information and guidance on this topic. The clinical implications of this study are associated to the fact that is was observed that there is a lack of information/guidance about this topic, as well as an urgent need of health promoting actions among the subjects of the study.
